A call-shop is a privately owned business that offers its customers the ability of making long distance phone calls at a lower cost than the local telephone companies. In Europe, Asia and Africa call shops are a popular alternative to telephone booths.
Call Shops provide telephone services for the public, for a fee, on a per call basis. The fees vary depending on the destination dialled. Ensuring that the Call Shop has reliable service and call records is of the utmost importance. For this reason Call Shops in all of these countries have been using Telcom Research's Globenet M-AXS dialer for over 5 years. The M-AXS is an expandable telephone control unit for 2 to 8 telephone lines, although the call shop industry has standardized using the 8 line configuration. The M-AXS can provide answer detection so that billing can begin at the proper time and can provide a call record that can be used for billing the user. In addition, the M-AXS also has serial commands that can be used to control each telephone through the call shop billing program.
A little over 3 years ago the need arose for a display that could be installed with each phone. This display would provide information to the user such as the number dialled, how long they had been on the phone and what the cost of the call was. Telcom Research developed the Fone Display. This unit is installed in the booth/cabin with the phone and it displays the time of the call and cost of the call at any moment or it can be programmed to show just one of these items. The Fone Display can be programmed as a Countdown version, so that the amount paid is preset on the unit and it counts down to zero, or Count Up version, in which the cost increases as the length of the call increases. In either version the automatic hang up feature can be used to control the call through the call shop billing program.
Because the call shop software is controlling the call, you can be sure that the cost on the Fone Display and in the billing software computer will be the same preventing any issues of the cost on the computer not matching the cost on the Fone Display. The Countdown version of the Fone Display make it very easy to have the customer use Pre-paid calling cards.
