In 2000, the 416 area code was running out of new telephone numbers.
In order to meet the growing demand for new telephone numbers a new area code,
905, was created and implemented into the area served by the 416 area code except
for the Greater Toronto Area.
To facilitate the use of the new area code 10 digit local dialling
(area code plus telephone number) was introduced into the 416 and 905 area code regions.
Due to the great demand of telephone service throughout North America 10-digit local dialling
has been introduced in the following major North American cities as well:
Atlanta, Baltimore, Dallas, Denver, Fort Lauderdale, Boston, Philadelphia, Houston, Miami,
New York, North Chicago, Orlando, Pittsburgh and Vancouver
In 2008, new overlapping area codes (and thus 10 digit dialling) are being introduced in Southern Ontario and Quebec.
