7 Digit or 10 Digit Dialing

In 2000, the 416 area code was running out of new telephone numbers. In order to meet the growing demand for new telephone numbers a new area code, 905, was created and implemented into the area served by the 416 area code except for the Greater Toronto Area. To facilitate the use of the new area code 10 digit local dialling (area code plus telephone number) was introduced into the 416 and 905 area code regions.
Due to the great demand of telephone service throughout North America 10-digit local dialling has been introduced in the following major North American cities as well:
Atlanta, Baltimore, Dallas, Denver, Fort Lauderdale, Boston, Philadelphia, Houston, Miami, New York, North Chicago, Orlando, Pittsburgh and Vancouver

In 2008, new overlapping area codes (and thus 10 digit dialling) are being introduced in Southern Ontario and Quebec.

Switching from 7 to 10 digit dialling, the addition of the area code to all local calls is a major inconvenience for businesses. This change means that all the functions of their communications equipment must be reprogrammed. This equipment includes:

  • Speed-dial lists
  • Telephone options and functions (e.g. call forwarding)
  • Fax machines
  • Modems and Internet connections
  • Security systems
  • Private branch exchanges and voice messaging
  • Auto-dial systems
It also means that company personnel must now dial 10 digits rather than the 7 they are used to dialing.

Telcom Research has solutions for this problem, which come with some additional benefits.

  • Automatic insertion of your area code for local calls.*
  • Implement call restriction/authorization on a per user basis on all phones in your system.
  • Block access to 900 and other toll numbers.
  • Least cost routing of all calls through multiple carriers.*
  • Generate Call Records for detailed cost allocation and control.*
    * The user's dialing pattern does not change with these features, they are totally transparent.

All of this can be achieved with the Telcom Research M-AXS 8 Line dialer or the EAL single line dialer.

10-digit local dialing is quickly becoming the norm across North America.
